I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had Anna Rosenwong as developmental editor for my translations into English of Mexican author Sofía Segovia's epic novels The Murmur of Bees and Tears of Amber. Anna worked with remarkable sensitivity towards what Sofía and I were aiming to achieve in terms of style and played a pivotal role in recasting the novels for their new market with her ideas and creative problem-solving. The success of The Murmur of Bees in the U.S. is testament to her artistry.
—Simon Bruni, translator Anna Rosenwong, as developmental editor for The Murmur of Bees, made me feel at ease right away. She got the spirit, the cadence, the rhythm of the story, and mine and Simon Bruni's voice, which can be doubly difficult in a work in translation. She worked to preserve them, she was open to our comments, and made a previously published novel more perfect. When the time came to work on Tears of Amber, I told her I trusted her absolutely. Once again, Anna GOT it. I knew she would. Trust between writer and editor is hard earned, but in this case well deserved. —Sofía Segovia, author Edits like Anna's inspire me to do my best work as a translator. Her instincts and edits are highly insightful, and it was a pleasure and a reward having her as my editor on
Where the Desert Meets the Sea. —Steve Anderson, translator & author Anna did such a fantastic job editing Mother Dear—she had a strong grasp of the author's style, and her changes and observations were all incredibly thoughtful and judicious. I learned an awful lot from going through her edit, and the whole text reads so much better now thanks to her input. So many huge improvements made with such a light touch! —Jozef van der Voort, translator |
It was a privilege to have Anna as the developmental editor for Lights on the Sea. She has the utmost respect for the work of the translator, an ear for the text, sensitivity for the reader, and a beautiful way of articulating her observations and recommendations. Working with Anna was a joy, and I look forward to collaborating with her again.
—Catherine Nelson, translator & professor Anna is a creative force and a fantastic communicator. The work we did creating Spot's anti-harassment training was fast-moving, complex, and demanding. We couldn't have made it happen without Anna's content strategy and UX writing leadership. —Paige Sáez, principal product designer at All Turtles Anna's work as an editor is unfailingly meticulous and thoughtful. Working together on Still I Miss You, I so appreciated her careful attention and keen insights, and her willingness to embrace strangeness when called for but also recognize when it was out of place. Her gentle queries compelled me to come up with numerous (I hope!) better solutions to thorny translation problems, and my translation is unquestionably improved with her edits.
—Andrea Rosenberg, translator & editor It's been a huge pleasure working with Anna on The Fire Blossom and Fires of Change. Because she is a translator herself, as an editor of literary translation she has a unique understanding for the kind of elegant finessing that a translated manuscript requires. Her attention to detail and obvious enthusiasm for writing make her the perfect collaborator. —Kate Friedrich-Northrup, translator During her developmental edit, Anna cut thousands of words from my translation of The Sin Collector—wisely, politely, efficiently, and apparently effortlessly. She asked smart questions and made brilliant suggestions. I would work with her again in a heartbeat.

Anna's acuity, tireless and meticulous attention, instinct for just the right word (those “marooned” books will always stick in my mind, as will “from mother’s milk to God’s glory,” from our warm-up effort with Unamuno), knowledge of Spanish, literary sense, and high standards make for a long list of valuable qualities in an editor. But even at that it’s not complete. For example, it includes neither her exceptional ability to put her finger unerringly and clearly on a weak spot (she sees right through shortcuts and evasions, as though with x-ray eyes) nor the positive spirit—born of her patience, tact, flexibility, and grace—marking every comment and query. What I’ve experienced and learned already has much more than repaid every erg of effort and nanosecond of time that the project has required. —Richard Goodyear, translator & former attorney |
Anna has been my writing coach during the past two years, while I attended a teacher credential program. She helped me improve my writing skills by not only helping to edit my papers, but also by explaining how to better express my ideas. She was not only the most prepared, but also the most dedicated and patient of all of the coaches I've worked with. She seemed to really enjoy her job. I was lucky to work Anna and I cannot recommend her enough.

I am a Chinese-English translator from Beijing Language and Culture University. Last year, I applied for seven English literature graduate programs at six prestigious universities which included Yale University, my top choice. As it was undoubtedly a great challenge for a Chinese applicant, I turned to Anna for advice and assistance. She helped me to rebuild the skeleton of my personal statement and polish my diction and expression to satisfy the professional requirements. With her instruction and assistance, I received an offer from Yale Graduate School of Arts and Science. I feel absolutely privileged and thrilled. I am fortunate to have Anna as my professional coach on a trip to my dream.
